God Shed His Grace On Thee
I do like to be aware of things going on in our country and around the world. But, I don’t watch the news as much as I used to. These days it seems that it is more negative and depressing than ever before.
Depending on the people that you talk to, there are a lot of complaints and opinions, but few solutions. Almost everyone I talk to, I make mention that we need to pray for our country.
Yesterday morning, as I was out in the backyard, I started thinking more about praying for our country. I thought about the song, America the Beautiful, and the line that goes, “God shed His grace on thee.” For many, many years, God has surely shed His grace on the United States of America.
Now I know that we pride ourselves as, “Americans,” and I understand, “American ingenuity,” and other attributes that describe our “American spirit.” But I also know that this country was founded on solid biblical principles. Regardless of what others may say, and how some wish to distort history, this nation was founded on Christian principles.
Yes, over the years, there have been many in this country who have worked very hard; many who have sacrificed much; many who made very wise decisions; but let’s not forget that God has truly blessed this country.
In these days of trouble, I don’t hear our politicians encouraging people to pray for our country. Instead, there seems to be no end of blaming, and, no end of spending. Some might conclude there is no sign of any wisdom either.
My point today? Pray for our country.
II Chronicles 7:14
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
What could the results be if more and more people took 5 or 10 minutes out of their busy, busy day, to just pray for our country? Pray for our leaders; pray for wisdom; pray for protection; pray for godly principles to be enacted. The Bible says, in I Timothy 2, that we should pray for all those who are in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
Below, I have two things for you. First, the original words to America the Beautiful. It’s interesting that the first and last chorus have, “God shed His grace on thee,” but for the other choruses, there is something different!
And, then, below that, is a prayer by George Washington that I thought would inspire you.
Pray for our country!
May God continue to bless America,
Mike
America the Beautiful
(lyrics by Katherine Lee Bates;
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassion’d stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness.
America! America!
God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.
O beautiful for heroes prov’d
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life.
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev’ry gain divine.
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears.
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
Prayer of George Washington
O eternal and everlasting God, I presume to present myself this morning before thy Divine majesty, beseeching thee to accept of my humble and hearty thanks, that it hath pleased thy great goodness to keep and preserve me the night past from all the dangers poor mortals are subject to, and has given me sweet and pleasant sleep, whereby I find my body refreshed and comforted for performing the duties of this day, in which I beseech thee to defend me from all perils of body and soul. Direct my thoughts, words and work, wash away my sins in the immaculate blood of the Lamb, and purge my heart by thy Holy Spirit, from the dross of my natural corruption, that I may with more freedom of mind and liberty of will serve thee, the ever lasting God, in righteousness and holiness this day, and all the days of my life. Increase my faith in the sweet promises of the gospel; give me repentance from dead works; pardon my wanderings, and direct my thoughts unto thyself, the God of my salvation; teach me how to live in thy fear, labor in thy service, and ever to run in the ways of thy commandments; make me always watchful over my heart, that neither the terrors of conscience, the loathing of holy duties, the love of sin, nor an unwillingness to depart this life, may cast me into a spiritual slumber, but daily frame me more and more into the likeness of thy son Jesus Christ, that living in thy fear, and dying in thy favor, I may in thy appointed time attain the resurrection of the just unto eternal life. Bless my family, friends and kindred unite us all in praising and glorifying thee in all our works begun, continued, and ended, when we shall come to make our last account before thee blessed Saviour…

Mike: What a fantastic blog today! Praying for our country is such a big part of our responsibility. Stop the worry and fear (as your new presentation says – and it is terrific I might add) and pray. Allow God to be God. Thanks for the reminders of the most important things like trust in God.
Love you,
Joan

Hi Joan!
You are so right, praying for our country is indeed our responsibility. If it wasn’t necessary and needed, God would have never asked us to do it.
God bless you,
Mike
