“What About Rich People?”
Since I have been talking about money these past few days, I thought I might as well talk about rich people. So, what rich people? How do they fit into all of this anyway?
First, let’s review for a moment. Money is not evil. The love of money is the root of all evil, but money is amoral – it is simply a medium of exchange, like salt was at one time.
Our absolute trust must be in God; not in our 401K, or savings account, or whatever – regardless of any kinds of stewardship vehicles we may be participating in, our trust must always remain in God.
So what about having wealth? Well, for those who think that money is evil, you can pretty much guess where they stand on this issue. And, we all know what other people say about rich people. You’ve probably heard phrases like “filthy rich,” “stinking rich,” or “lousy rich people,” attributed to those who are wealthy. But I don’t care what people think. What does God think?
It seems that there is an underlying belief that being rich is wrong, and yet, most people wouldn’t mind at all if their bank account balance had an extra zero or two or three at the end of it!
There are a lot of people who assume that anyone who is rich got their wealth dishonestly, or never had to work for it. Some see the rich as snobs looking down upon the rest of the world. How rare it is to find someone who is actually glad that someone else has tremendous wealth!
Most think that rich people don’t deserve to be rich. It’s just not fair for them to have all that money! There are some religious people who actually think that being rich is not right in the sight of God.
Some point out that in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus told the man to sell all his possessions. If one takes the time to carefully read that account, the problem being addressed was trust. The man was trusting in his possessions and not in God. The topic at hand was not trusting in riches.
In fact, if you continue reading you will see that when Peter asked a question, Christ told him that they would receive a hundred fold now in this time for what they were doing, and in the world to come eternal life.
The Bible says charge them that are rich in this world to be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but trust in the living God Who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Now, if God has a problem with being rich He would have said to tell all the rich people to sell everything so they wouldn’t be rich.
There are a number of great people mentioned in the Bible who were rich…very rich. Job was the greatest man in the East. He lost everything and yet the Bible says that God restored double back to him! Why double? God is in the business of giving, not taking away.
Abraham is called the friend of God and the father of all them that believe. The Bible says that he was very rich in cattle, silver and gold. How about David? Solomon? The list goes on and on.
And when Jesus died, it was Joseph of Arimathea, a rich man, the Bible says. who took care of the burial. He had the means to do what he did.
Some might argue that those people were all special and important people. And you’re not? Are you saying God loves them more? The Bible says that nothing can separate you from God’s love.
God is no respecter of persons, and the will of God, from the Bible is, “I wish above all things that you would prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers.”
There is nothing wrong with wealth and riches. Those that find themselves with wealth and riches should not be high minded nor trust in those “uncertain” riches. But, rather, trust in the living God, Who is always trustworthy, and they should do good things and be generous and giving.
Choose to have a great day!
Mike
