The Last Supper – Part 3
What Was The Sop?
During the meal known as “The Last Supper” Jesus talked bout many things. He also did a number of things that were very significant. I have in previous posts mentioned the washing of the disciple’s feet as well as the memorial of “Holy Communion.” See Part 1 and Part 2.
He told them that one of them would betray him. The disciple leaning on Jesus asked who it was, and Jesus said it would be the one that he gave the sop to.
So, just what was the “sop?”
There would have been a common dish at the meal. The bread was flat, thin and round. While you ate, everyone would dip into the common dish, many times wrapping a piece of bread around a bit of food.
The sop is when the host would dip his piece of bread into the dish and then give it to the person to whom he wanted to show his greatest love and esteem. In placing the sop in the person’s mouth, it would show to all those present, as well as to the person, the love and honor that the host he had for him.
Jesus already knew that Judas was about to betray him. When Jesus told them that one would betray him, and they began asking, “Is it me? Is it me?” Judas asked Jesus, “Is it me?” Jesus answered him in the affirmative.
So Judas knew that Jesus knew. Yet, there he sat at one the position of honor at the meal, and, he was given the sop by Jesus.
Actually, by Jesus Christ extending to him that much honor and love, Judas indeed had a chance to change his plans. But, we all have freewill and we all make our own choices. Even an act of love and honor directly and personally from the Lord Jesus Christ himself does not guarantee that someone will do what is right.
There are times when we extend love and help to someone and they do not accept it. Don’t let that bother you. Choose to do what is right, regardless of the response you get in return. That is the example that Jesus gave us.
More on the “Last Supper” next time.
