The Last Supper – Part 4
In The Garden
As I have mentioned in the last three posts, there were some remarkable evens that took place the night that Jesus Christ was betrayed and arrested. From the incredible teachings and lessons during what is called, “The Last Supper,” to the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, to his arrest and trials that night, the Scriptures provide so much detail!
But for me, one of the greatest events that night was Jesus praying the Garden of Gethsemane.
He Wanted To Pray
Matthew 26:36-44
Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.
And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
What is so strikingly remarkable is that the Lord Jesus Christ, by his freewill, chose to suffer and die for us. It was not automatic for him to lay down his life for mankind. He made a choice!
“O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
He Made A Choice
He chose to do his Father’s will instead of his own will. God so loved the world that He chose to give His only begotten Son. Jesus Christ so loved God that he chose to do what was required for mankind’s salvation – he willingly laid down his life for you and for me.
As he prayed shortly before his arrest, he was asking the Father if there was any other way to do this. He knew what the Scriptures foretold of what the Messiah would have to go through. (See Part 2)
What is so remarkable, and overlooked by so many, is that he had a choice! He could either do his own will, or, he could choose to do the Father’s will. The task, or cup, in front of him was not easy to say the least. Yet, he chose to do his Father’s will.
God Gave All Of Us Freewill
One of the greatest things that God has given us is freewill. Every day we make choices. We choose what thoughts to think and what actions to take. Jesus Christ chose to die so that we could choose to live; to live a life that is more than abundant.
We can choose to take advantage of all that his death, resurrection and ascension accomplished. We can choose to accept the righteousness that is now ours as born again ones. Or, we can choose to reject it and wallow in our own religious theology.
Romans 10:1-4:
Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
During this time of year many Christians read the Scriptures that talk about the passion of Jesus Christ. They reflect on those events. And yet, we should not ignore the great realities of what Jesus Christ accomplished for us. And we find so many of those great realities in the epistles of Romans through Thessalonians.
So, take the time to read and reflect on what Jesus went through. But then, take the time to read and revel in all that he accomplished for you!
Have a great weekend!
