Money Is Not Evil!
With so much in the news over the past several months about money, I decided to do a three part series on this blog about money.
There are some who proclaim that “money is the root of all evil.” Some even claim that’s what the Bible says. But the Bible doesn’t say that at all.
It is true that evil people use money for evil things. But evil people have also used automobiles for evil things. Does that make automobiles evil?
At one time salt was used as money. In ancient times, salt was worth much more, because it was hard to get, and could be used not only to give foods flavor, but also to make them last longer. Food could now be kept past its season, and taken on long trips.
People often traded salt for other things. Like money today, salt was used as a medium of exchange. It was of high value in China, Greece, the Middle East, and Africa. In the Mediterranean area, including Ancient Rome, salt was used for money.
The word “salary” comes from the Latin word for salt, because they paid people in salt. After people learned how to get salt from the ocean, salt became much cheaper. Its value was greatly decreased.
Beaver pelts and other commodities in the early days of America were used as money. In fact, bartering has been around long before money arrived. Bartering is still practiced between individuals and businesses on an informal basis today.
How would it sound to hear someone say, “Salt is the root of all evil?” Or, “Beaver pelts are the root of all evil? What about corn, and cattle, and …? Through the centuries there have been many things used as a medium of exchange. Today for the most part, that medium is money.
The Bible says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” Money is not evil. It can, and it has many times been used for evil purposes. But money has also many times been used for good purposes. Money in and of itself is not evil.
But loving money and trusting in money is wrong. The Bible tells us to love and trust God. It tells us to not trust in money. It also tells us that God will supply all that we need, in abundance.
Tomorrow, I will talk about how to love and trust God without loving and trusting in money. And then on Wednesday I will talk about “rich people.”
Choose to have a great day!
Mike
